Business Licenses

Brentwood offers a dynamic environment for doing business. With its strategic location providing easy access to Interstates 64 and 44 and I-170, Brentwood is at the crossroads of the St. Louis region’s business community. 

All businesses operating in the city limits of Brentwood, including home occupations, are required to obtain a Business License. Businesses are required to renew their license annually. The license year for all businesses begins January 1 and ends December 31. Licenses are due and payable on or before February 15 of each year. A delinquent charge and delinquency rate may be applied if payment is received after February 15.

Business Licenses, Taxation and Miscellaneous Business Regulations are regulated in accordance with Chapter 605 of the Brentwood Code of Ordinances.

Prior to receiving a Business License, the owner must apply for and receive a Certificate of Occupancy. City staff will conduct an inspection of the place of business to ensure the location and the occupancy of the location complies with all applicable provisions of the City’s Zoning Code, Building Code and all other safety codes. All businesses are required to pay the $60 inspection fee.

Although ALL  businesses operating in Brentwood are required to obtain a Business License, some professions are not charged for a Business License in accordance with Section 605.020. These professions are considered “Exempt” businesses. The City distinguishes between various business types, which also varies how the business license fees are calculated (Section 605.200). If a business type is not found in Section 605.200, all other service occupations, merchants, manufacturers, and are subject to license fees in accordance with Section 605.1100 and calculated based upon gross receipt taxes.

Home Occupations

Home-based businesses are allowed in all residential zoning districts, but the main use of the home must remain residential. A home business is considered an accessory use and must function in a manner that is not noticeable or offensive to the neighbors. An inspection is required for all businesses operating out of homes. The Business License Renewal process has changed as of December 2022. To renew, go to  app.mygov.us. Use the email address connected to your business license and select "Forgot Password". This process will link your existing business license and allow you to begin the renewal process. 

Payment

The City of Brentwood can accept payment by cash, check or credit card. Credit card payments can be done through the myGov portal and incurr an additional 3% transaction fee. If paying by check, please include the invoice. Cash payments must be done in person at City Hall.
